Capcom Explains Street Fighter IV PC Delay – Piracy Not to Blame

3 03 2009

Street Fighter IV may claim to have lived out its early days on the street, but that’s a damn lie. In reality, the current king of fighters spent less of its time scrounging together street cred and more picking up virtual credits in the backs of arcades ploughed flat by herds of rail-thin DDR players.

However, a quick look at the wreckin’ machine’s boxy guts reveals a shocking secret: It’s a PC. Runs Windows and everything. So why delay the game’s PC punch-out until after consoles take it for a ride?

“Well the answer is the game’s not done,” Capcom VP Christian Svensson said after calling accusations of piracy-avoidance “completely absurd.” “So, to put things into perspective, the Street Fighter IV team is working on two things right now. They’re finishing the PC SKU, and people are like, well the arcade was the PC, how hard can it be? Well we had all of these additions for the console version in terms of content that didn’t exist on the PC. All of that needs to be rolled back in.”

“All of that takes time. The testing on PC in particular is a very, very time consuming process. Testing and optimisation versus obviously when we’re working on console or an arcade board for that matter, it has a known configuration that we can optimise for out of the gate,” he explained.

“Your next question to me is probably, well why don’t you just hold the console versions until the PC is done? The answer is the unfortunate financial realities of making our numbers within certain financial years or quarters drives when we have to actually get some stuff out of the door.”

“The other part of this is while the PC is an important part of our business today, the forecast does not justify holding back the lion share of the revenues that comes from consoles to make it happen.”

Well, at least he’s honest.

Happy Square Root Day, Math Geeks!

3 03 2009

Don’t fret if you missed out on one of the many celebrations around the globe toasting 1234567890 Day, we hear the Unix crowd can get a bit rowdy anyway. Now there’s another reason to shed that pocket protector and let loose with your friends – Square Root Day!

You only have nine chances every century to celebrate Square Root Day, with this one falling on 3/3/09 (do the math).

“These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day — and poof — they’re gone,” said Ron Gordonn, a Redwood City teacher.

While we can’t understand why there wouldn’t already be excitement over the holiday, Gordon started a contest to get people buzzing abou the event. The winner, determined by who has the biggest Square Root Day event, will recieve (wait for it…) $339.

Miss your chance to celebrate and you’ll have to wait until April 4, 2016 for the next Square Root Day.

ATI, NVIDIA Announce New Mobile GPUs

3 03 2009

Competition in the mobile GPU segment is strong. Intel routinely leads the market with its integrated chipsets. However, with the lack of discrete Intel products, NVIDIA and AMD are left to fight for the discrete notebook GPU market.

AMD announced new mobile GPUs today that are the world’s first 40nm graphics processors. The new 40nm process is being used in the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and HD 4830 GPUs. Both GPUs support DirectX 10.1 games and HD content as well as being energy efficient for increased battery life.

AMD’s Rick Bergman said in a statement, “People now decidedly prefer mobile PCs, and innovations like this 40nm mobile GPU show AMD is uniquely positioned to make the best entertainment experiences of desktop PCs possible in a notebook. Depending on the performance of the panel or external monitor, laptops that feature these tiny, powerful but efficient graphics engines can run today’s most demanding game titles at beyond 1080p HD resolution, or playback full 1080p HD video with high energy efficiency thanks to ATI PowerPlay and 40nm process technology.”

The HD 4860 mobile GPU supports GDDR5 RAM with almost twice the performance of GDDR3 RAM. AMD says that by utilizing the 40nm technology it can build the GPU in a smaller ASIC die size, which in turn allows the discrete GPU to be used in smaller notebooks. The first notebook to feature the HD 4860 will be the Asus K notebook. Other products using the new GPUs are expected to hit market in Q2 2009.

AMD’s archrival NVIDIA also announced a new mobile GPU called the GTX 280M along with other new mobile GPUs. NVIDIA claims that the GTX 280M is the world’s fastest mobile GPU and offers 50% more performance than the previous generation of mobile enthusiast level GPUs.

NVIDIA’s Rene Haas said in a statement, “These new NVIDIA GeForce GPUs are for those who won’t accept compromise in notebook performance. These new GPUs meet the needs of the most demanding consumers in the marketplace by delivering industry-leading performance at all price segments along with features that go beyond graphics.”

Along with the GTX 280M, NVIDIA also announced the GTX 260M, GTS 160M and GTS 150M GPUs. Big Green says that the GTX 200M and GTS 100M series GPUs allow mobile users to play the latest HD video games on a portable platform.

The GTX 280M can also be used in SLI mode and takes advantage of NVIDIA HybridPower technology to reduce power consumption when needed for longer battery life. NVIDIA claims that a pair of GTX 280M GPUs in SLI mode offers the most powerful notebook graphics platform available today. The new mobile GPUs also support PhysX technology to add realistic physics effects to video games along with support for NVIDIA’s CUDA architecture.

The new GPUs will be used in gaming machines coming from ASUS, Clevo, and MSI with versions of the machines being shown at CeBIT 2009 going on this week.

NVIDIA also launched GTS 250 desktop video cards this week.

Apple Announces New iMac, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro Models

3 03 2009

Rumors typically start swirling about new Apple products well before the official announcement of the products. For a long time now, rumors have been bandied about that claim Apple was getting ready to launch new computer systems, including a revision to the Mac mini.

Apple has finally made the products official with announcements today that three new updated products are now available. Among the new products to receive updates is the aforementioned Mac mini. The new mini features NVIDIA graphics with the GeForce 9400M GPU that is now inside the new MacBook notebooks. Apple says that the graphics performance is now five times greater with the NVIDIA GPU than it was when Intel supplied the graphics for the machine.

Graphics aren’t the only thing that was updated in the mini. Buyers can now get up to 320GB of storage and a 120GB HDD is standard. Machines can be optioned with up to 4GB of RAM as well. Apple says the mini is the world’s most energy efficient desktop computer with power consumption under 13 watts at idle; that’s 45% less power than previous generations required. The back panel has five USB ports, Gigabit Ethernet, Mini DVI port, FireWire 800 port and a Mini Display Port.

The CPU used in the mini is the Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2GHz with a 1066MHz FSB. Inside the small 6.5-inch square is also 802.11n wireless networking and Bluetooth is built-in. A slot-loading SuperDrive is standard on all minis that allows burning of CDs and DVDs. iLife 09 and Mac OS X Leopard are standard on the machine as well. The new mini starts at $599.

Apple also announced updates to the Mac Pro line adding quad-core Nehalem-based Xeon processors to the mix. Apple claims that the new processor makes the Pro up to 1.9 times faster than the old model. The integrated memory controller allows the Pro to use DDR3 RAM at 1066MHz for a 2.4 times increase in memory bandwidth.

Turbo Boost is a new feature on the Mac Pro that allows the user to boost the clock speed of the CPU with a button press based on their workload. The feature turns off cores of the CPU that aren’t being used to save power and increases the speed on the active cores up to 3.33GHz on a 2.93GHz CPU. The machines have options for AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. A base quad-core machine starts at $2,499 with a dual processor machine starting at $3,299.

The Apple iMac all-in-one line was updated with price cuts that make the 24-inch model cost about what the 20-inch version retailed for before. The 24-inch iMac now sells for $1,499. The machine uses NVIDIA 9400M graphics providing a resolution of 1680 x 1050 on the 20-inch iMac and 1920 x 1200 on the 24-inch iMac. The machines are built using recyclable glass and aluminum. The machines are also free of harmful toxins like BFRs and PVC plus the systems meets Energy Star 5.0 and EPEAT Gold requirements.

CPUs for the machines include the Core 2 Duo at 2.66GHz with an option to add the Core 2 Duo at up to 3.06GHz. The 24-inch iMac now gets 4GB of RAM standard and 640GB of standard storage space with an option for up to 1TB of storage. The 3.06 GHz version automatically gets 1TB of storage and all iMac models can use up to 8GB of RAM. The 20-inch iMac starts at $1199.

Apple also recently announced the release of its Safari 4 web browser.

Rumor: New PlayStation Portable to Abandon UMD Proprietary Format

3 03 2009

Thanks to information from its anonymous sources, Eurogamer is reporting the next generation of the PlayStation Portable (PSP) will feature a sliding screen and abandon the UMD proprietary format. Eurogamer first reported on the possibility of a new PSP late last year and a continuous stream of rumors confirming this rumor emerged this year.

Other sources such as Acclaim developer David Perry have been quoted making similar announcements on his Twitter and Facebook accounts stating, “I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!” Perry later confirmed his statements in an interview with Kotaku.

According to Eurogamer’s sources, “The screen is basically the same as the one in the 3000 – except it slides.” When ‘closed’, the screen won’t cover the entire face of the console, and the unit will be “significantly smaller in width.” Images of what the new PSP may look like are available here on VG247.

In addition to the sliding screen and the loss of the UMD drive, the new PSP will allow shoulder button-only games to be played when the screen is in its closed position. With the console in its closed state, most controls will be inaccessible, but games that use the shoulder buttons exclusively such as LocoRoco will be playable. It is expected that the unit can also be used for media playback in this configuration.

Eurogamer has also been told that Sony is approaching developers for ideas for games that only require the shoulder buttons. When asked to comment on the rumors Sony stated they do not comment on rumor or speculation.

Microsoft’s Office 14 to Make Better Use of Online Document Sharing, Editing

3 03 2009

One of Microsoft’s most dominant products is its Office suite. For over a decade Microsoft has enjoyed a virtual monopoly on office processing software. Yet today, it finds itself facing surprising new competition from new competitors, some of whom are offering free software like Google’s free online Office Suite. Google predicted that online clients were the future of office software, not Microsoft’s traditional desktop installations.

Apparently, Microsoft agrees; Chris Capossela, senior VP of the company’s information worker group, the group in charge of developing Office 2007′s successor, Office 14, reveals in a new interview that Microsoft Office is headed online in a big way. While Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote will still be available in desktop client form, the key to the new Office suite will be Office Web Applications, lightweight web client version of each of these projects.

Users will be able to go online to edit and view their documents, as well as collaborating with others on common documents. Microsoft claims that it will maintain an edge over Google by offering no loss of fidelity between its offline and online offerings. States Mr. Capossela, “Unlike Google and Zoho, we won’t crush stuff the Word user created in the first place.”

Microsoft is offering up its APIs, called the REST APIs, to web developers, so that Microsoft Word and Excel may soon be incorporated into web pages. Mr. Capossela comments, “We have a big focus on developers. Part of that focus is around new APIs, part of that is around interoperability documentation, so people can make their solutions work with Office more easily than they did in the past.”

Office 14′s online face will be powered in part by Silverlight, Microsoft’s rich Web application plug-in, a competitor to Adobe’s Flash. A Silverlight browser plug-in will come with the new version of Office. However, there is also a Silverlight-free online version of the Office Suite, for users who choose not to install Silverlight.

With Office 14, Microsoft also plans to bring Office to the clouds. Microsoft’s free cloud computing OS, Windows Azure will also be powering much of Office 14′s power tools, such as Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. Azure already powers parts of Exchange Online, such as the identity services. The changes to Office will help many services be done purely from the cloud, saving machines from local work or storage.

For the booming smart phone market, Microsoft plans a more full-featured Office Mobile branded mobile version of Office 14. Users will not only be able to view documents, but will be able to edit and collaborate on them, all from their phone. The mobile version will also feature new SharePoint connectivity and other features. Mr. Capossela continues, “Office Web Applications become far more important given that smart phones are taking up a far larger percentage of the overall mix of phones that are shipping in the world.”

Inclusion of web content, such as images, links or blurbs from sites will also be made easier and more effective. Mr. Capossela explains, “Multiuser authoring is fun and interesting, but also just being able to go out and peruse the Internet and grab video files, pictures, and snippets and automatically have them sourced when you put them in your document, those are new styles of researching and collaborating that are really important.”

Microsoft is keeping tight lipped on the new version’s pricing. Mr. Capossela adds, “We feel incredibly good about the price of Office. We’ve never had more people buying Office at retail than we’ve had with Office 2007.”

Office 14 is set to inherit the Office legacy sometime in 2010, following the release of Windows 7 in 2009, according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s latest remarks.
